Baby With The Bathwater

I had never heard of Christoper Durang until I came to NEC and worked on Betty's Summer Vacation fall of my sophomore year. I had some issues with understanding the nuances of some of the characters as well as of some of Durang's humor. Today I went to go see another Durang play at NEC Baby With The Bathwater. Unlike Betty's Summer Vacation this play had a good mixture of serious and funny moments which is what made it enjoyable.

Baby With The Bathwater marked the directorial debut for my good friend Nate Hartley who is a junior. I found it to be a very enjoyable show and the cast was very strong and versatile. The play is about a dysfunctional family Helen (Dominique Grant 12') and John (Elliot Greer 10') At the opening of the show they are dealing with a new baby who do they not quite know the gender of . I found this plot point to be kind of confusing honestly. As the child who named Daisy grows older the dysfuction seems to grow more evident and the dynamic between the characters of Helen and John is really what made the show work. In the early days they hire a Nanny (Leanne Derosa 11') who is kind of representation of good parenting that John and Helen are meant to follow but I am not sure if they ever really catch into that vibe through out the play. In scene two there is a really powerful seen between Miss Pringle (DeRosa and the principal Patricia Als 13') when Ms Pringle approches the principal about a disturbing essay Daisy has written. The principal does not find the essay to be disturbing and thinks that there is nothing wrong with the student when she is obviously disturbed. In the following scenes Young Man (Rene Cobar 11') is seeing a counselor and recounts his family situation and the confusion of his childhood. The truth of dysfunction comes out and how bady it has affected Daisy who through out the scene talks about changing his name various times. The ending is quite happy as Daisy who ends up changing his name to Alexander ends up marrying Susan (Jacci Drummond 10') and they have a child of their own.

Congrats to Nate the cast and crew on fabulous show!

We Love You Conrad

When I first found out my high school was doing Bye Bye Birdie as their musical this year I was really excited as that is one of my favorite plays EVER!! I have seen it two other times prior to this, once at Peacock Players when Jared Nathan played Conrad Biridie (RIP Jared) and in 2006 when my sister was in it in 8th grade as Mrs. Macafee. I just got home from the show and overall I was very pleased. :)

The cast was full of versaitile talent and I was quite impressed. Range of talent has not really changed that much since I graduated five years ago and every year will have it's stand out performers. I can name a few examples from when I was there but let's focus on the task at hand. While I thought everyone was good the paritcular people who I thought stood out were Jon Constable who played Hugo Peabody( only his second show.. I wonder why he didn't get involved with theatre sooner) Tate Molaghan who played Rose Alvarez, Athena Korcharlias who played Mrs. Peterson (who I also believe played the same role in the middle school production in 2006 but I could be wrong about that.) and Brad Odhner who played Mr. Macafee ( VERY impressive for a freshman.) Memorable musical numbers include Put on A Happy Face, Telephone Hour A Lot of Livin To Do and Kids.

Congratulations to the cast and crew on a wonderful performance!

American Idol Week 4 Top 40 Billboard Hits

So did the top 11 deliver with their interpertations of top 40 Billboard Hits? In all honesty only a select few did. Let me just say up front that there are very few performers out of this year's top 11 that I would pay to see live so thus I am not going to waste my money with buying tickets for the live tour and wait til the indiviaul people go on tour.

Performance Summaries
Top Crystal, Siobhann Big Mike Lee
Crystal and Sibohann continue to do phenomnial. They did amazing renditions of Me and Bobby McGee and Superstious. I think Big Mike and Lee are really beginning to hit their stride. Lee had a lot more confidence then he has had in previous weeks. His rendition of The Letter by The Boxtops was impressive. I am not familiar with that song at all. Big Mike has had two stand out performances in the past few weeks. He did a very moving rendition of When A Man Loves A Woman I seriously almost cried.
Middle: Katie Casey Didi

Katie has really hit her stride. Two good songs in a row with Wild Horses last week and Big Girls Don't Cry this week. I think she'll be in the compettion for a little while. Casey did a very enjoyable rendition of The Power of Love by Huey Lewis and The News. I think he uses the guitar as a crutch and needs to break away from using it so much. Didi's performance this week had no wow factor to it at all. That was in part due to song choice. VERY HORRIBLE SONG! She could actually be in danger this week but I am hoping she stays around because she is really good.
Bottom: Aaron Andrew Paige Tim
Results: Bottom 3 :Paige Tim Katie Who went home: Paige
WHY is Andrew still in the compettion? I used to be a huge fan of his in the beginning but at this point he is starting to get so boring and all of his performances are starting to sound the same. He has not been able to deliver since Hollywood Week when he sang Straight Up. Personally that particular performance set the bar WAY too high for him. None of his performances since them have memorable whatsoever. Aaron was in a similar situation as Paige was last week as far as illness goes.. he had a double whammy of laryngytis and tonsilitis and that did not work out well for him as far his performance goes. I have to give him credit for singing when he was sick so I am not going to say he was all around horrible. He sang I Don't Want To Miss A Thing by Aerosmith and it was really pitchy and the song was just not a good song choice for him. Tim's performance of Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen seemed almost too musical theatre for me and he butchered the song. In my honest opinion Paige has not been able to deliver at all since the beginning of the top 24. It is quite possible she could go home this week.
As far as the results are concerned I was suprised to see Katie in the bottom 3 but am happy she ended up being safe. Thank god Paige went home. I was getting really bored with her.

Top 10: Aaron, Andrew, Casey, Lee, Tim, Crystal, Katie, Siobhann, Didi Big Mike
Will they be able to deliver with R&B?: It really depends on the songs they get. Big Mike will most likely hit out of the park..as far as the rest go only time will tell. Hopefully next week's performance will renew my faith in this season American Idol. If not I will probably find other things to occupy my time until the finale is on.
Top 1o Week Mentor Usher

General thoughts of this season of American Idol.
As a person who has been a fan of Ameircan Idol since it's inaugural season in 2002 I would say that out all nine seasons of American Idol up to this point this season has left me very unfullfilled. Previous seasons have had at least 5 or 6 stand out performers.
Examples include:
Last season Alexis Grace, Scott McIntyre,Allison Ireheta, Matt Girarud,Jasmine Murray, Danny Gokey, Kris Alllen, Adam Lambert
Seasons 1-7 Jordin Sparks, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Kimberly Locke, Rubuen Studdard, Clay Aiken, Diana Digarmo, Ace Young, Chris Daughtry, Bo Bice
This season in comparison has only 4 stand out performers Crystal Katie Lee and Siobhann. All of the other contestants seem to be very mediocre by comparison. Certain performers like Casey and Didi still have yet to give a wow factor performance. Big Mike has only had two stand out peroformances so far and hopefully we will have more in the coming weeks. Andrew has not been able to give a solid performance since Hollywood Week and I scratch my head and wonder why the judges are continuing to keep in the compettion. If he gets a decent song choice next week he will do well.. perhaps song choice has been his issue all along and he just needs to get a good song in order to hit his stride like Katie did. If he doesn't give a solid performance next week he will definitley go home. In my honest opinion Aaron and Tim need more training and should not have even made it as far as they have though Aaron has done slightly better than Tim has since the beginning of the top 24 performance shows. The top ten has been more vocally strong in previous seasons unlike this season where there have been few performers that have been consistant with their performances. The people who have been vocally strong have gone home in previous weeks which has been disappointing. This shows me that judges are not to keen on picking people that have talent and that willl be successful. People that have been eliminated up to this point that I think would be really strong compettiors if they were still in the compettion include Katelyn Epperly, Alex Lamberlt, Michelle Delomar, Lilly Scott John Park and Jermaine Sellers.

And seriously what was up with Miley Cyrus being a mentor this week? Are the producers of American Idol trying to reach a younger demographic by getting Miley to be a mentor? She was not that good and in my honest opinion not qualified at all to be a mentor. I think the only people she gave meaningful advice to were Katie, Aaron and Tim. I don't think the other contestants took her all that seriously because she is so much younger then they are. They really should have chosen someone who has been in the industry longer... I would have even benn content with Britney Spears being a mentor over Miley. I felt like last night's performances were too Disney Channell oreinteted... once again something that proves this show is trying to reach a younger demographic. Miley performed and I had to mute the tv because I can't stand to hear her sing. Then Demi Lavato and Joe Jonas sang a duet which was more tolerable then having to listen to Miley sing but I wasn't all that crazy about their performance.

As far as the judges are concerned I have no complaints except for Ellen. I really don't think she is cut out to be a judge on AI. She really doesn't have any good feedback to give to the contestants and she mostly provides comic releif which a singing compettion show does not really need.

This will most likely be my last season watching American Idol. I feel sad to say this but it is the sincere and honest truth.

Merging Blogs and moving on

Okay so I want to simplify my life on blogspot a little bit and merge my fanfiction blog and my blog about Annie JR with this one. I just find it so pointless to have seperate blogs for something that can easily be disuccsed in this blog. Does anyone know how I can do that? Leave a comment and let me know.

So about a month ago I wrote an entry about how I was a bit infuriated with myself about how much I have been struggling with moving on from stuff related to the Barn Playhouse. I have realized that I have been largely fooling myself by trying to think I am over my depression when honestly I am not even halfway over it. I have been in denial of this for such a long time. It took an email Maggie Politi sent to my mother this morning to realize that I haven't totally and completley moved on from stuff related to the Barn..that I still really have a long way to go. Admitting the fact that my depression related to the Barn is not REALLY over is the first big step in dealing with the never ending cycle of obsession when it comes to stuff related to the Barn..one step closer to all this self-doubt being over. I just need to totally let go of the Barn and let the past be the past. Let memories be memories. I haven't been forgotten by anyone..people love me despite whatever doubts I may have had in the past.

For the record I am so thankful to Maggie for emailing my mom this morning. I don't know if she has any idea how much that email meant to me but it really meant a lot.

The song Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson fits this issue to A T. Seriously.
"I'll spread my wings

and I'll learn how to fly

I'll do what it takes til' I touch the sky

And I'll make a wish
Take a chance
Make a change

And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun

But I won't forget all the ones that I love

I'll take a risk

Take a chance

Make a change

And breakaway."

so from this point forward there will be no entries in this blog about anything related to the Barn Playhouse. I am not going back there to see shows this summer per my own peronsal decision. It's time to move forward with my life. Get rid of the negative feelings that never should have begun in the first place.

American Idol Top 12 Summary

American Idol Top 12 Summaries

Theme: Rolling Stones

Bottom 4: Aaron, Andrew, Lacey, Tim

I am not familiar with a lot of music by The Rolling Stones so it was hard for me to make judgments on a lot of the songs. I'm going to keep my analysis very very general. Starting with the above listed bottom 4.

Tim and Aaron have moved down in my ratings this week..usually they are somewhere in the top like an 8 or a 9. This week they recieved ratings of 6 and 5 respectively. Tim was a little bit more entertaining then Aaron but I still think Alex should have stayed instead of him last week. Lacey has not given any performances that really stood out to me since the beginning of the performance shows. Her rating has pretty much stayed pretty consistant and that is four. While tonight's performance was less pitchy than other ones I just found this performance to be boring. I hope she goes home this week. I feel the same way about Andrew...sad because he was one of my early favorites.

Out of the bottom 4 who is most likely to go home Andrew and Lacey

Otherwise most of the performances tonight were pretty solid. I wasn't all that crazy about Casey's performance though he has done better in previous weeks. Katie FINALLLY got a song that was perfecet for her and I think that will definitley get her back in the game. She sang Wild Horses and I feel she had a really good connection with the song and the audiecne. Sibohann and Crystal are definitley the top contenders for the number one spot this season.. their performances have been very consistant since the beginning of the performance shows and still continue to impress me. While Paige improved from her performance in the past couple weeks I honestly think the fact that she had larygytis and did not get a lot of time to rehearse because of being sick will most likely hurt her chances of going foward... if she gets into the top 10 based SOLEY on pity votes I will be very upset.

Who I voted for: Crystal and Lee

Ratings of this week's performances

10 Crystal and Lee

9 Siobhann and Big Mike

8. Didi and Katie

7.5 Paige

6 Tim

5. Casey and Aaron

4. Lacey and Andrew

Results!!
Bottom 3: Lacey Paige Tim
Who went home : Lacey
As I said Lacey was starting to bore me but I have mixed emotions about her leaving. I think she could have potentially made it to top 5 had she been put through to the next round. Her biggest consistancy issue was pitch.. same thing with Paige. Tim was the shocker of the three. I was hoping that Andrew would be in the bottom instead of him. While Tim's performance last night may have not been his best one at least he has been consistant. Andrew has not been consistant at all and has not had ANY impressive or outstanding performances since Hollywood Week. If does he not go home next week I will be surprised.

Taking a raincheck.. litterally.

So due to weather and scheduling issues (yes there is such a thing in NH as cancelling school because of flooding) I will no longer be doing tech work for Bye Bye Birdie. Not too big of a disappointment as I hope to help out in some capacity with show at Souhegan in the fall once I am more settled into to a job schedule. My next tech job is doing props for Wizard of Oz with Riverbend Youth Company.. so excited to be working with some of the Annie Jr kids again and some new faces too.

American Idol Week 3 Summaries

Top

This week there were only two outstanding girl performances. Those performances were by Crystal and Sibohann. I think both of them have pretty good chances of getting into the top 12. Crystal sang Give Me One Reason by Tracy Chapman and her performance was my favorite one she has done up to this point. Siobhann sang House of The Rising Sun and her performance was flawless no pitch problems whatsoever. Lee Alex and Aaron had the outstanding performances on the guy's side. Aaron and Alex are becoming better at looking more confident on stage and it shows. Aaron is the powerhoue of the guys and I won't be too shocked if he makes it to the finale.
I would like to see a Siohann and Alex finale. Don't know how likely it is that that will happen.
Ratings
10 Siobhann and Lee
9 Aaron Alex and Crystal

Middle

Didi bounced back from two really bad performances in the past two weeks. She really connected with the song and the audience. I felt the same way about Katelyn. Last week her performance almost put me to sleep this week I almost wanted to get up and dance. Lilly did an interesting take on I Fall To Pieces by Patsy Cline. As Kara said she did a good job with making the song current. While this a valid point I think she totally butcherd the song. For the boys my middle ground performances were those from Casey and Tim, Casey has fallen a little low on my scale recently but this has been his best performance since Hollywood Week. He did fantastic with You'll Think of Me by Keith Urban. Tim did a mindblowing captivating rendition of Hallelujah. His perfromances have also been sub par over the past two weeks but he proved that he will be in this compettion for at least another couple weeks. Don't know if he'll make it to the finale though
Ratings
8 Katelyn and Tim
7.5 Didi
7 Casey
5. Lilly

Bottom

Katie just can't seem to succeed with picking a good song. This week she sang Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson.. while she didn't completely butcher it it was pitchy in certain spots.I honestly think she is in danger of going home this week and that makes me sad because she was my favorite from the very beginning and I was really hoping she would make it to the top 12. Lacey has most certainly overstayed her welcome.. I was actually disappointed that she didn't go home last week. I found her performance to be very boring and she picked a horrible song this week. Paige's performance of Smile did not do anything for me at all. Like the judges said it's a song that's made to inspire and uplift. She failed to make that connection and as Simon said it could very well be the end of the road for her. While Todrick did better than the past two weeks I really think he was all over the place with pitch in the song Somebody To Love by Queen. I really think Anndrew is at the end of the line. He really hasn't been able to deliver any stellar peformances. His performance since getting into the top 24 have been very inconsistant. He did horrible with Genie in A Bottle by Christina Aguliera. Big Mike is really shocker to be in my bottom this week. He has been pretty consistant since Hollywood Week but sadly his performance this week did nothing for me at all. He could easily in danger of going home but the judges seemed to like his performance so he could be safe.
Ratings

6.5 Paige
5. Andrew and Todrick
4. Big Mike and Lacey
Who I think should go home: Lilly and Paige, Todrick and Andrew
Who will go home Katie and Paige, Todrick and Big Mike
RESULTS!!!
I am so-so about tonight's results. I was really hoping Katelyn and Alex would make it to the top 12 because they were amazing. This did not happen much to my disappoitnment. Aside from a select few the top 12 does not have a lot of good vocal talent in it. I am very happy Katie is arounnd for another week.. she deserved to stay and get a second chance after all the horrendous song choices she has gotten hopefully she gets a Rolling Stones song that will blow her other performances out of the park next week. Paige and Lacey should not have made it. Their performances this week were boring and all their peformances since after Holloywood Week have been inconsistant. Hopefully Andrew gives a good performance next week that will balance out all of his inconsistant ones.

Summer can't come soon enough :)

I am still waiting to hear back about weather or not I got the job at Summer Theatre In Meredith Village this summer. Hopefully I will get the job there. In the event that I don't I will most likey apply for summer camp jobs closer to my house.

I have been browsing through the line ups for various theatres and have compiled a list of shows I want to see. What shows end up making the the cut will depend largely on budget because Matt and I are trying to save money to go to NY during my birthday week to see A Little Night Music. The only definities at this point are My Way and Chicago at Summer Theatre in Meredith Village.

Other options include

Always Patsy Cline Maine State Music Theatre
Monty Python's Spamalot Maine State Music Theatre or Ogunquit Playhouse
The Drowsy Chaperone Ogunquit Playhouse

New Website

http://theatretechdiva.weebly.com/

Hello Everyone
Above is the link to my new website. Please check it out and tell me what you think about it. On that website is a blog where I will be keeping people up to date on my current projects. I will keep this blog for a little while at least but then eventually phase it out because primarily this blog was used to keep a log of my Milford Cabinet Articles and at this point I am not sure if I will have that job for much longer because of staff reductions at the newspaper. The next article I will be doing will be about the PTA Play Children of Eden... for some reason I think that could be my last one but I don't want to get pessimistic.

Don't start freaking out... this blog will stay around at least til the end of this year and then I will decide what I want to do with it.

American Idol Week 2 Girls

Week 2 American Idol Girls Performance Show Summary

Ratings
Crystal 10
Lilly 9
Paige 8
Katie Siobhann and Michelle 7
Didi 6.5
Katelyn 6
Haeley 5
Lacey 4

My predictions of who will go home Lacey and Haeley. I will lose all faith in the voting public of American Idol if they stay another week they are horrible. On the guys side Jermaine and Todrick willl be most likely to go home. Their performances were not outstanding or memorable at all and they butchered their respective songs

Summaries
Top
Crystal started off the night and she rocked! I think she has a good chance of making it all the way to the end and winning. I felt the same way about Katie Stevens but this week I lean toward thinking she may be in danger of going home..hopefully America will give her a second chance. Back to Crystal her performance was totally flawless no pitch problems whatsoever. I really liked her song choice too. Michelle was next in my top. To be honest with you all I don't even remember her from the auditions but she has definitley made herself known since then. She did a wonderful rendition of Creed's With Arms Wide Open. Definitley downloading that to my ipod when I get around to it. Lilly's performance was another flawless one. I see her making it to the top ten. Sibohann is a powerhouse and she did phenomninal with her rendition of Think by Aretha Franklin
Middle
As I said earlier I lean toward thinking that Katie will be in the bottom this week.. while her performance was slightly better than last week's I think it was a little bit pitchy but not as pitchy as some of the other performances (*ahem* Haely and Lacey.. we'll get to those in a little bit.) I feel like Didi needs to do a little better with picking her song. She did slightly better than last week but I didn't find her performance to be that memorable though I do really love Lean On Me... she tried really hard to make it her own but it didn't go over to well for her. I didn't care for Katelyn's song choice either.. while I thought she did a good job I just don't really like that song very much.. she needs to do something more up tempo. I liked Paige's rendition of Kelly Clarkson's Walk Away..though pitchy in certain spots I thought she did good and that Kelly Clarkson would be pleased.
Bottom
As Randy said Lacey's version of Kiss Me by Six Pence None The Richer was a bit karaoke. I thought she could have done a lot better. If she sticks around another week I really hope she doesn a better job at making what ever song she gets her own. Don't even get me started on Haely. She's just horrible all around. The Climb is the only song I actually like by Miley Cyrus and she totally murdured it. It was pitchy all over the place and hurt my ears. I was glad to see the performance end and hope that she goes home tomororw.

RESULTS!!

Bottom 2 Boys Jermaine and John I would have perferred Todrick to go home over Jermaine. In my honest opinion Jermaine was much better vocally. I was diappointed that John went home. He was one of the better guys this week and I was hoping he'd stick around.

Bottom 2 Girls Haeley and Michelle. SWEET JESUS! I am so glad Haeley went home. No more pitchy performances that hurt my ears. Michelle on the other hand was good and had a lot of talent. Lacey should have gone home instead.

Welcome to Sweet Apple Ohio circa 2010

Yesterday I went to Souhegan to meet with Stan and watch the Bye Bye Birdie Rehearsal. I am more excited then ever about having the oppotunity to work on this show.. one of my favorites musicals of all time. I am very happy to get the opportunity to broaden my technical horizons by designing the lights. Yesterday's rehearsal they mostly worked on blocking the second act and learning the chreography for A Lot Of Livin To Do one of my favorite dance numbers from the show. It looks like the show is coming along good so far. I can't wait to get to work on designing the lights! :)

Stay tuned for more Bye Bye Birdie updates including pictures and hopefully videos.

Week 2 American Idol Boys

Overall I am not at all impressed with the talent pool of guys on American Idol this year. I feel that during the auditions the judges could have done a lot better with who they selected. There are very few bright spots. Here are my predictions who will make into the top 10 based on tonight's performances
Andrew
Lee
Tim
Alex
John
Michael

Tonight's performances were mediocre by my standards. I may not be the best judge since I don't have a very good singing voice myself... my singing voice is actually my biggest insecurity. While most performances were much improved from last week's performances I would say there were only two or three performances that really stood out.

Top
I was totally captivated by Andrew's and Big Mike's performances. Andrew was much improved from last week. .My next top rated performance was that of John Park. He totally nailed John Mayer's Gravity and I disagree with Simon's opinion that he is going home this week. Alex Lambert looked very uncomfortable last week and didn't seem prepared at all. 180% degree turn this week as I thought his performance was amazing. He was another person who was really pitchy last week and he definitley improved a lot. I think he will only continue to get better.

Casey James was at the top of his game last week... this week he went down a couple notches. The song he chose was I Don't Want To Be by Gavin Degraw and while he had his own twist to it I wasn't impressed with what he did with it. People who have done this song in previous seasons *ahem ahem* Bo Bice. Aaron Kelly did a nice rendition of My Girl by The Temptations. He is definitley really talented and will go far in the compettion..and omg 16. He's pretty amazing! The only complaint I have is that he needs to pick something more recent. Lee Dewyze I do think will be a contender for a spot in the top 10 and I don't know if it's too soon to say he'll make it to the finale. Like Alex he did a complete 180% turn from last week. I am not familiar at all with Hinder but I think he did a really good job with that song. He was pitchy last week but there was much improvement. Tim Urban did a pretty decent rendition of Come On Get Higher by Matthew Nathanson. Again in terms of pitch a much improved performance from last week.

Jermaine was a bit better vocally then Todrick. If they end up staying they need to pick more current songs. Todrick totally butchered What's Love Got To Do With It by Tina Turner. His pitch was all over the place and tried way too hard too to make the song his own. It was way too karaoke honestly.

Tomorrow night is ladies night. Looking most foward to see what songs Crystal and Katie do. They are my top two girls this season. I hope they make it all the way to the end. I sincerely hope Haeley Vaughn goes home...if she doesn't I will be disappointed

Upcoming shows I will be reviewing Junie B Jones, Baby in The Bathwater

Milford Cabinet Article Update ( 3/3) I was supposed to be doing an article about the One Act Play Festival but someone is already doing a three part series on the directors. I am kind of disappointed because I had already started to do a lot of work on my interviews and was getting really good information. :( The next article I will be doing is about the PTA Play Children of Eden. Gonna start doing stuff for that in a couple week. Hopefully I'll be able to fit working on that in judging how busy I'm going to be with Bye Bye Birdie.
